Evidence for daily life and popular worship in hellenistic Pella : the rescue excavation in the G. Pappas plot
Author:
Abstract:
In contrast with the private residences at Pella already known, the building partly investigated during a rescue excavation on the Georgios Pappas plot (Fig. 1, A-2- P1. 55 α-β) is not distinguished by any luxurious construction or by wealth of associated finds. Its publication was nevertheless felt to be useful in view of the evidence furnished by the portable finds, especially the terracotta figurines, for daily life and popular worship. The most important figurines consist of snakes, grapes, eggs, found in pairs, a horseman, and parts of terracotta busts (P1. 57 α-θ, 61 α-ε), which are associated with the cult of Dionysos in the 2nd and the early 1st c. BC, before life in the Macedonian capital was interrupted by a devastating earthquake. In addition to female deities such as Aphrodite, the Mother of the Gods, and Persephone, recent finds from excavations in Macedonia reveal that Dionysos was one of the major gods worshipped here and played a role in every s phere of human activity.
