Protogeometric graves on Skyros : contribution to the PG Pottery

This article examines the grave offerings discovered in two plots of land at Magazia on Skyros. In 1984, during the course of work on a drain in the Seirinakis plot, two poros cist graves dating from the Protogeometric period came to light.The second plot was systematically excavated in 1986, after an application by the owner (the Hellenic Tourist Organisation) for a permit to extend the Xenia Hotel.Three graves were uncovered, similar to those in the Seirinakis plot - a circumstance that assigns the two neighbouring plots of land to the same cemetery.The graves date from the same period, towards the end of the Protogeometric and beginning of the Sub-Protogeometric period.The large number of grave offerings are evidence for the existence of a flourishing, advanced settlement, which seems to have been peaceable, judging from the absence amongst the offerings of any objects that might form part of military equipment.
