The excavation conducted by the XXV Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in 1992 in the G. Raisakis plot at Kastelli Kisamou, Crete, brought to light the west part of the Early Christian cemetery of the town. A total of 44 graves was located, all of them oriented east-west. One type of grave was covered with a mosaic pattern of pebbles. Fifteen (15) of these have funerary inscriptions engraved on the surface. These are mainly fragments of irregularly shaped marble slabs taken from earlier buildings of Roman times. In addition to the 15 inscriptions found in situ, two (2) more were discovered during the course of the excavation that may be assigned with complete certainty to the same cemetery, bringing the number of inscriptions to 17. Finally, the mosaic covering of grave 21k, which has a Chi-Ro monogram and the letters A and Ω may be counted as an eighteenth inscription. The present study analyses the text of the inscriptions from a palaeographical a nd historical point of view, where possible, and assigns the find to the period from the end of the 4th to the beginning of the 6th c.AD.
