Pithoi from Andros with relief and incised decoration

Relief pithoi, a special category of Geometric and Archaic pottery, have been found in most of the Cycladic islands. In Andros, too, a substantial proportion of the pottery found in Zagora and Hypsele is also of this category. Here are presented fragments of such pithoi from places other than the two mentioned above, especially from the ancient city of Andros. They are dated in the 8th to the middle of the 6th century BC, covering a wide period of the production of such pithoi. These fragments have features which have also been attested in other workshops, such as the workshop of Tenos, and some unique traits. The fragment No 2, decorated with semicircles forminga lotus, a frequent theme in painted pottery of the 7th and 6th century BC, and the fragment No 14 with the complex decoration of spirals and lotus pattern are one of a kind. The lowest dated fragments tend to lose their local characteristics, as the differences between individual workshops disappear.
