Abstract:
This article refers to two areas of Argolid known today as Spiliotaki and Zoga. The first one, 7 km south of Mili (Lerna), is named after Anagnostis Spiliotakis, a famous political person during the Greek Revolution of 1821. Excavations, begun in 1964 by N. Verdelis and continued later, have revealed significant ancient remains: a temple devoted to Demeter and Kore, parts of cemetery and houses. The correlation of the ancient sources with the archaeological finds leads to the identification of the valley with the Argive kome of Ελαιούς. Mythology says that Hercules burried the head of the Hydra at the road that connected Lerna with the kome. Although few traces of structures remain; the existence of a kome is attested by numerous finds, such as terracotta figurines and vases confirming that the area was inhabited from the 6th to the 3rd c. BC. Rescue excavations in the properties around the temple testify that the valley was not abandoned during the Roman an d Byzantine periods. The district of Zoga, 4 km west of Kefalari, is one of the less explored areas, although localed at the junction of important ancient land routes connecting Argolid with Arcadia. The area is probably named after captain Zogos, a person who, according to recently published documents, was responsible for some financial matters. The first small scale rescue excavation that took place in 1993 in the property of the Saint Ignatios church brought to light four graves cut into the natural rock. Judging by the offerings found in two of them they can be dated in the Late Archaic-Early Classical period. The identification of the ancient settlement with the Argive kome of Kechreai is under examination, because epigrafical evidence is still scanty.
