Lead relief sheet with Herakles : the use of lead in Euboea

A circular sheet of lead found in Eretria bearing the representation of Herakles strangling snakes is the starting point for an investigation of the development of this iconographical subject. The original of the subject is most probably the reverse type of coins current in 4th century BC Boeotia. The same subject, inspired mainly by those coins, was also depicted in other forms of art.The presence of the popular Theban hero on an Eretrian find should not cause surprise, since Herakles was the main figure in a series of legends and epics closely linked to Euboea. The worship of Herakles is also well attested.The relief representation of Herakles strangling snakes in a tondo brings to mind the relief emblems on the lids of the numerous pyxides dated in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The Eretrian fragmentary lead sheet most probably constitutes the main part of the lid of a lead or wooden pyxis of the same period.After a short review of metallurgical activity in Euboe a at that period, this article examines a number of lead objects from Euboea, and especially from Eretria, and the technique of their decoration, as well as the sources of lead-supply to the island.The absence of related archaeological data does not allow us yet to attribute the lead objects to a local workshop. Nevertheless the occurrence of argentiferous lead ores in the region of Karystia and the proven knowledge of lead production in the same area possibly indicates the existence of a metallurgical workshop in Eretria. This workshop would have specialized in the production of lead artefacts and maybe also in the production of lead.
