A late byzantine icon of the virgin in the iconographic subject “Prophets from Above”

This article publishes an icon of the Virgin and Child in the iconographie theme “The Prophets from Above”, which hangs on the templon of the church of Ayios Georgios at Neos Mystras and was executed in 1824 by the well-known illustrator of the Memoirs of Makriyannis, Dimitrios Zographos. As a visual form, the icon of the Virgin is part of the late Post-Byzantine religious output that combines the predominant Byzantine tradition with elements drawn from the art of the West and also with the forms of popular art.In the icon under examination, the accurate hand and the sensitivity of a folk painter reveals the vitality of its creator, who realises his expressive potential within the context of an essentially traditional art.
