The sacred herds of Helios : Socio-economic factors of sacred animals in the antiquity
Author:
Abstract:
Apart from individual animals, the presence of which was mainly symbolic and/or religious, herds of domesticated animals which the ancient Greek Sanctuaries also owned constituted a significant part of their properties. Their presence is known to us through the written sources and especially through the sacrae leges. In this article emphasis is placed on a global examination of the above subject. The collected material (the research) refers to sacred animals which formed part of the sanctuaries’ property and to sacred animals which were controlled by the community rather than by the priests. The sacred animals belonged mainly to the food cycle and were destined to be sacrificed. Sacrifice of animals was also the main source of meat distribution. The presence of sacred animals was intimately related to the organization of the city-state. Their existence had significant political consequences, as the grazing area was related to spatial limits of the city-states and t heir control. Finally, it is worth noting the ideological parameters legalize similar practices, from which the financial profits were not insignificant.
