Red-figure krater from Acharnes
Author:
Abstract:
A red-figure krater with a representation on the main side of a victorious pentathlete receiving the J.Apprize from two Victories was found at Katevasia-Monomati, Acharnes to the east of the Roman complex excavated during the building of Kymis Avenue from Kato Kiphisia to the Olympic Village. The vase was probably erected on a tomb, since it was found to the north of an enclosure wall for which there are indications that it enclosed the Classical cemetery of the ancient deme of Pergase (Ano Pergasi). Unfortunately, this hypothesis could not be confirmed by excavation: the site was not investigated further, because it lay outside the boundaries of the expropriated land. The larger part of the krater is preserved in fragments, and the main side is in an excellent state of preservation. On the second, fragmentary, side there is a representation of a young man wearing a himation and a bearded man (possibly a trainer or instructor) engaged in conversation of a possibly erotic character, a scene that perhaps takes place in a palaestra or gymnasium. The krater was probably a prize for the victory won by the young athlete in some local contest, and is of great interest on several counts: the rare iconographie subject, the crowning of the athlete by two Victories, one winged and the other without wings; the small number of vases with depictions of athletic victories found in Attica; and the find spot on the periphery of the Olympic village. The painter of the vase (the Florence Painter) has retained several elements from the old tradition, in an attempt to reconcile the Archaic decorative style with the new age in his rendering of the figures and the drapery of the garments. The vase is dated to 470-460 BC.
