Abstract:
The present article presents three new Kerch pelikes from Rhodes with Amazonomachy scenes, which are attributed to the workshop of the Amazon Painter and the Griffin Group Painter (second half of the 4th c. BC). The attribution of the vases is used as the occasion for a summary of the characteristic features of both groups, and an attempt at a general classification of their work, based on composition and style. The stylistic differences observed within both workshops are attributed to the hands of different pupils or less competent colleagues. Through comparison of the two groups, similarities are identified that derived from the mass-production of the vases and the treatment of the same subjects, which led to the repetition of iconographie types. The second part of the study consists of a brief catalogue of red-figure vases dating from the 4th c. BC and found on Rhodes, from which it is concluded that the vases with Amazonomachy scenes on this island represent on ly a small proportion of the finds.
