The iconography of female heads on Kerch vases

Attic vase-painting of the 4th c. BC includes an iconographie group found on vases of the so-callederch style, which consists of female heads rendered without the body and usually surrounded by objects or other human or animal figures. These heads may be divided into two large groups on the base of the headcover they wear: heads with a female headcover and heads with a Phrygian cap. Examination of the iconography of these representations reveals that they form part of the cycle of Aphrodite or other deities, and that they are consistent with the general tendency in the 4th c. BC to develop a new symbolic language in the iconography.
