A hoard of Hellenistic jewellery from Thebes

In summer 1997, digging work for the construction of the main sewage pipe of the town of Thebes provided the occasion for the investigation of a large building of the Hellenistic period, discovered to the south-east of the railway station. The rescue excavation that followed demonstrated that a hoard placed in a clay, unpainted pot had been concealed beneath the floor of the building. The hoard consists of a group of jewellery made of gold and semiprecious stones and 457 bronze and silver coins dating from 288 to 146 BC. The interment of the hoard is assigned to 146 BC, on the basis of the dates of the latest coins in the group. The concealment is connected with the very unstable political situation at this time: in the 2nd c. BC, Boe- otia was repeatedly the battlefield for clashes between the Romans and the Greek cities fighting for their liberty. Study of the jewellery revealed that it dates from the early 3rd (Knot of Herakles, rosettes, beads, plaques, flowers ) to the early 2nd c. BC (earrings with Erotideis, necklace with lion-griffin-head terminals), while the form and design of the interior rooms of the building in which it was found recall those of commercial shops or workshops in a stoa building. This interpretation is consistent with the concealment of coins that had been in circulation for a long period, and also with the meticulous masonry of the building.

Η αποκατάσταση των κοσμημάτων πραγματοποιήθηκε στο εργαστήριο του Μουσείου Θήβας από τον ικανό συντηρητή Παναγιώτη Βαλμά. Η φωτογράφηση έγινε από τον Κώστα Ξενικά- κη. Η πρώτη παρουσίαση των κοσμημάτων σε συνεπτυγμένη μορφή έγινε τον Οκτώβριο του 1998 στο Ninth International Conference on Boeotian Antiquities, University of Manito ba, Canada, όπου και δόθηκε για δημοσίευση, με τίτλο Jewellery in a Hellenistic Hoard from Boeotian Thebes. Όμως, η παρέλευση πέντε και πλέον ετών χωρίς την έκδοση των Πρακτικών του παραπάνω Συνεδρίου με ανάγκασε να αποσύρω το κείμενο προκειμένου να περιληφθεί στις Μελέτες του Αρχαιολογικού Δελτίου., Περιέχει εικόνες, συντομογραφίες και βιβλιογραφία, Το άρθρο περιέχεται στο τεύχος: Μέρος Α'-Μελέτες
