Abstract:
Recent work with pre-reading children and non-reading adults has shown that native speakers of English who are not literate are not able to manipulate phonemic segments of speech. This finding is the basis for a re-evaluation of the claim that phonemes are facts of the linguistic competence and performance of all native speakers of a language.
