Abstract:
Modem Greek graphematics, as everybody writing, reading and teaching knows, raises a number of problems (difficulties of traditional spelling, differences in use, etc.) met by the school grammar (cf. spelling simplifications, one-accent rule, rules for the use of punctuation marks, etc.), the prescriptions of which, are, however, not followed by all users (as in other language uses it is left to the context to clarify the correct meaning, etc.). Some remarks are made in this paper generally on writing systems and specifically on the prevailing uses in Common Modem Greek (alphabet and spelling, punctuation, abbreviations, etc.) toward a more clear and accurate recording of our speech (although a golden mean is necessary in this matter, because the proliferation of signs may be useful to the linguist but impractical to the ordinary user).
