Abstract:
In a class of students of English language background the teacher of Greek could emphasize some aspects of Modern Greek, which can, possibly, help the learning process. The long language tradition of the Greek language can be a strong motive for the students, since Greek is the oldest European language, confirmed in written form at least since 750 B.C. Another aspect of MG is its flexibility in the construction of sentences, as well as in word infexion. Unquestionably a lot of Greek words, prefixes, suffixes, etc. have passed to English, especially in the terminology of sciences, medicine, arts, etc. Aspects of the MG which can be emphasized in a class with students of English background, who learn Greek as a second or foreign language, relate to word production, e.g. diminutive words, the agent suffixes, the patronymic suffixes, the great number of the compound words and the possibility of forming new compound words.
