In recent years systematic research on Byzantine women has revealed the importance of their role during the 11th-12th century in many areas of socio-economic and political life. Although their presence in the daily life of Constantinople has been much studied, this is not the case with the provinces. This study aims to detect developments regarding the role of women in the political and socioeconomic life of the provinces. Although the evidence in the sources is meager (at least for the 11th-12th century) the donor scenes on provincial monuments constitute valuable material for studying provincial élite women of Komnenian Byzantium.
