Abstract:
In this article the extent of Democritus’ influence ethical and political ideas on Plato ’s Laws is examined. After critically examining the main views that have been supported on this issue (by P. Natorp, G. Aalders, R. Ferwerda, and T. Cole) Democritus’ B 255, B 250 and B 186 is compared to Plato ’s Laws 693B and 629D on the value of the “concord ” in life and the development of the city-state and also the conditions under which progress can be achieved. Further, Democritus ’ belief on the “wise ruler ” is compared with Plato’s view of the “philosopher-king”. In addition, Democritus ’ doctrine of μεσάτης (B 191; B 233) is compared with Plato ’s Laws (691C; 636D). At last, Plato’s ideas of the “original state of things” (Laws 676A679B) are examined comparison with the background of Democritus ’ relevant doctrine.
