Abstract:
This study supports the idea that the place-name «Ποικίλον ορος», mentioned only in Pausanias’ text «Αττικά» (37,7) doesn’t probably exist. Arguments based on topography, meaning and grammar are lined up and the replacement of the phrase «γενομένοις δε αντοΐς κατά το ποικίλον καλούμενον ορος» with « γενομένοις δε αντοΐς κατά τον ποικίλον καλούμενον δρον» is proposed. So, it is supposed that, because of an incorrect original or subsequent reading, they wrote «δρος» in the place of «δρος» (meaning demarcation, a natural or artificial border, of a region or property) which sounds similar after the suppression of the rough breathing. Of course, it is presupposed and relevant indications are cited, that the sanctuary of Apollo and the rest of deities in Dafni or the adjoining sanctuary of Aphrodite were called « Ποίκιλον». Finally, it is stressed emphasis on the fact that this correction cannot be confirmed or contradicted but accidentally. Incidentally, the use of the adjective «εναγής» in Aeschylus’ 466 verse of «Πέρσαι» is justified (note 5).
