Abstract:
In the euripideian drama Alcestis Admetus’ parents avoid self-sacrifice for the salvation of their son. Alcestis, Admetus’ wife, is the only person who accepts to die, in order to save her husband ’s life. Before Euripides, Phrynichus had composed a tragedy with the title Alcestis. Apart from Phrynichus and Euripides, subsequent literary sources (Apollodorus and Hyginus) of the Hellenistic and the Roman Period had repeated the story of Alcestis. The art of the antiquity adopted scen es connected with Alcestis. There are works of art, such as South -Italian vases, Etruscan items, Roman frescoes and Roman sarcophagus dated from the 5 th century B.C. to the 2d century A.D. Those worksof art are decorated with scenes inspired directly or indirectly by the euripideian Alcestis, such as the farewell to Alcestis’ family.
