Male and female figures in medieval pottery from Rhodes

The pottery comes from excavations in the medieval town of Rhodes. Typologically, it consists of incised polychrome ware, more specifically that characteristic of the production centres of Venice, and it dates from the second half of the 15th century. The pottery comprises cups or plates, with male or female figures, in profile, incised on the inside. The choice of decorative motif, the repetition of motifs, and the standardised manner in which they are rendered may well have been indicated by some specific use of these vessels.
