Abstract:
The Corfu Museum of Asian Art houses a fairly small collection of coins and amulets in the form of coins, mainly from China, which are still unpublished. The collection forms part of the Collection of Grigorios Manos, the founder of the Corfu Sino- Japanese Museum, the name of which was changed to Museum of Asian Art in 1973.There are no details in the Museum archive relating to the date, place and manner in which the collection was acquired. Without doubt, however, the coins, like the other, over 10,000, objects in the Manos collection, were purchased by Grigorios Manos in the late 19th and early 20th c. Manos was an active presence at auctions in Vienna and Paris, where he lived while acting as Greek ambassador, and where there was at that period intense interest in works of art from the Far East. The total of 72 objects of this kind, apart from the Chinese coins and amulets, includes six from Japan, dating from the 17th to the 19th c., four from Annam (North Vietnam), from the 19th c., one byzantine, and one from Germany, from the 17th c.There are many gaps in the collection of Chinese coins in the Museum, due mainly to the fortuitous and occasional manner in which it was assembled. The chronological gaps, however, do not detract from the value of the collection as a museum exhibit, since the individual coins are representative of the history of Chinese coinage from the Chou dynasty down to 1911.The present catalogue represents a first attempt to publish the coins of the Corfu Museum of Asian Art, and more specifically the Chinese coins, which form the majority. The coins are classified in chronological order.
