A sundial found in Patrae

The marble sundial discovered during an excavation in Patrae is of the conical type, with certain peculiarities in the form of the lateral sides, the receptacle for the fixing of the gnomon, and the dial-plate. The differences it presents when compared with products of known sundial workshops, the errors and omissions in its making, the traces of a Latin inscription on its base, and the fact that the markings of the dial-plate correspond to an impressive degree with the latitude of the city of Patrae, lead to the conclusion that this sundial was made by a local craftsman of the 1st century B. C.
