Abstract:
In 1981, the remains of an Early Helladic settlement came to light amidst the foundations of a building under construction in the district of Rouf, in Athens. A small part of the settlement was excavated and has revealed traces of three building phases chronologically assigned to the EH II period. Examination of the pottery and other finds has shown that the settlement was closely related with the other Early Helladic settlements of Attica, particularly those at Ayios Kosmas, Rafina and Asketario. The settlement is topographically related to the Early Helladic dwelling at Akademia Platonos and to the Early Helladic settlements at Keratsini and Palaia Kokkinia. The abandonment of the settlement at the end of the EH II period coincides with the critical age of destruction of most of the Early Helladic settlements in Attica and the Pelopon- nese, while the absence of an EH III phase brings to mind once again the problem of this phase in Attica.
