Roman roads in Aitoloakarnania

Abstract:
Three milestones are published here; two are new finds (dated to the ages of Trajan and of Carus-Carinus-Numerianus) from the area of Stamna-Angelokastro and the third is an older find (dated to the age of Maximinus) from Drymos. On the evidence provided by these three milestones, an attempt is made to reconstruct the course of the Roman public road of Aitolo- akarnania, which connectedCalydon — and viaCalydon, Patrae —-with Nicopolis. The retracing of the route takes into account mainly the configuration of the land and the location of Early Christian ruins. The author believes that these ruins mark the settlements of Aitoloakarnania where there was a renewal of activity during the period when Nicopolis was declining. Most probably the road had been in use since the mid-1st century B.C., but the final tracing (with measurements and pillar markings) was completed during the reign of Trajan. The second part of the study compares this Roman road «marked with pillars» to the corresponding routes found in Roman itineraries (itinerary no. 79 of the Tabula Peutingeriana and No. 324-328 of the itinerarium Antonini). Topographical considerations, the selection of stopover places (harbours, river-mouths) and the order in which these are noted in the above-mentioned itineraries, lead to the conclusion that they trace a route serving the coastal navigation that ensured the communication of Nicopolis with the ports of Aitoloakarnania and of the Corinthian Gulf.
