A reconstruction of the eastern facade of the temple of Nemesis at Rhamnus - a repair during the reign of the emperor Julian?

Abstract:
The reconstruction of the eastern façade of the temple of Nemesis at Rhamnus poses some important questions as to the reason why and the time when this was made. Dinsmoor’s assumption that the sculptured metopes of the façade had been carried off to Rome is no longer accepted, since it has been proved that the temple did not have sculptured metopes. This reconstruction, therefore, must have been made after a destruction caused by natural phenomena. The parts reconstructed show a negligence in the execution and are not assignable to the era «between the time of Augustus and the time of Hadrian». The possibility that problems of statics may have prevented the completion of the works should be considered as quite likely.Furthermore, the history of the deme of Rhamnus, which seems to have been on the decline from the 1st century B.C. onwards till its final extinction, does not justify the undertaking of major works during that period. An explanation is perhaps provided by the religious reform of the emperor Julian (A.D. 361-363), in whose reign a number of temples and public edifices of Athens were repaired.
