Proxenic decree from ancient Pharsalos

Abstract:
In October 1982, a stele inscribed with a proxenic decree (Inv. No. Arch. Col. of Pharsala 82/1) was found in a heap of rubble from the town of Pharsala. The stele has come from ancient Pharsalos and is dated to the first half of the 3rd century B.C. Unfortunately, the upper part is missing, so that the name of the foreigner who was to be honoured as proxenos of the city, has not been preserved.Another stele inscribed with proxenic decrees (Inv. No. Arch. Col. of the Pythion Π. 23) has come from the ancient Pythion of the Perrhaibian Tripolis. This stele, which is also incomplete, contains at least two decrees. The first bestows honours upon a certain Xenocles son of Dicaiocrates of Assyria, otherwise unknown from ancient sources. The second honours possibly two foreigners whose names have been very fragmentarily preserved. Both decrees are dated in the inscription, the stele had been set up in the sanctuary of Apollo Pythios.
