Grave stele in Chalkis Museum

Abstract:
In 1979 a relief grave stele of the «naiskos» type in Pentelic marble (inv. no. 4758) was found by chance at Phylla on Euboea, near Chalkis. The top is broken and the head of the relief figure and the capping are missing (pres. h. 1.08, w. 0.58-0.65, th. 0.10-0.13 m.).A naked youth of the wrestler-hunter type is shown walking towards the right holding a strigli and a bird acompani ed by his dog.The subject matter places the relief in the Ionian Hunde-Jägerstelen circle and has 4th century iconographie parallels from the Ionian region and Boeotia. The figure in its stance and structure is characterized by the rules of chiasmus. The workmanship is of good quality, although it shows some weaknesses in the adaptation of the design to the relief surface. Using stylistic comparisons with Attic reliefs (e.g. the London stele), the Chalkis stele can be dated to the 2nd quarter of the 4th c., and specifically to ca. 360 B.C. The work belongs in the framework of Euboean sculpture and is considered to be the product of a local workshop with influences from Ionian iconographie models and influenced stylistically by Attic 4th c. art.A stele of an athlete from Yialtra of Aidipsos is also presented, an earlier find with a thematic and stylistic similarity to the Chalkis one.
