Abstract:
A new hoard of billon trachea, found during the excavation of building lot in Arta/1983, is analysed and its composition compared with that of the old 1923 hoard from the same city (NC 1923, 30-46, pi. Ill) and the unpublished hoard with the conventional name of Ioannina / (?). The new types contained in the hoard are indicated and attributed, and some rare issues are commented on.The 1983 Arta hoard, whose concealment took place a few years after the retaking of Constantinople by the Byzantines in 1261, is the occasion for a review, in the form of a supplement, of the circulation in Greece of the, chiefly, bronze coins (billon trachea), based on the known 12th and 13th c. hoards from Greece. A statistical examination of the material has led to the following findings:1. Comnenus and Angelus issues continue to enrich the hoards even after 1261.2. The D-V types of large module Latin imitatives of the Constantinople Mint mainly occur in Northern Greek (and East Balkan) hoards, are late., and must be the product of the Bulgarian State.3. The Latin imitatives of large and small module are contemporary.4. The direct copies (Hendy’s Bulgarian imitatives) which circulated up to and after 1261, parallel from one period and after with the D-V issues of Latin imitatives of large module and the issues of the Tsar Ivan II Asen, can only doubtfully be regarded as the product of the Bulgarian State.
