Parallel Title:
Pottery finds of the byzantine and post-byzantine periods from the excavation "South of the Acropolis", 1955-1960
Abstract:
The excavation "South of the Acropolis”covered the stretch now occupied by Leoforos Di- onysiou Areopayitou from the Makryiannis junction to the Acropolis, and all the area in front of the Odeon of Herodus Atticus and the Stoa of Eumenes. In the 12th century a quarter of Athens had grown up in this place with buildings grouped in clusters (A, B, A) parallel with each other, each cluster having the same orientation and an open space around it. The architectural remains that were uncovered belonged to house cellars, according to the interpretation given to the numerous built pithos-shaped cisterns and the portable clay pithoi found on the floors. The 12th century date for the settlement was determined by the clay vessels that had remained ever since that time in the cisterns, jars and wells and on the floors.Clay pots from later destructions show that some parts of the district were reoccupied in the post-Byzantine period ( 16th-17th century).
