Απόλλωνι, Ασκληπιώι, υγιείαι : epigraphical evidence for the Asclepieion at Veroia

The inscription published here contains a list of objects offered to Apollo, Asclepius and Ygieia, for the most part by priests at the conclusion of their term of service. It seems, however that they were not only the personal dedicatory offerings of these priests, but also some investment of the revenues of the temple coming exclusively from two sources: the money collected, in the treasury and the money from the sale of animals and from the exploitation of their wool and hides (sacrificial). In the section on the problems of interpretation the for and against of both views are examined in turn.The votive objects, all probably of silver, are vases of relatively light weight. Apart from the many well-known vessels there are a number that are rarely encountered in epigraphic texts, such as the άντιγονίς, άργολικόν νποφιάλιον, and some found for the first time, such as the κιμώλιον.The majiority of the names of those who made the offerings are common Greek ones, but they form an addition to the list of names known from Véroia because at least half of them are found for the first time in that city.This inscription, which is dated to 240-225 B.C., is very important for all of Macedonia because it illuminates certain aspects of the functioning of a large sanctuary, and particularly because it shows that the sanctuaries in this region were organized on the same basis as, and with similar sectors of activity to the corresponding ones in the south of Greece, the islands and Asia Minor.
