Abstract:
In the years 1980-1982 a large cemetery of the Classical period some 3-4 km w-sw of the town of Lavrion was discovered and excavated. Some 200 graves were excavated, many of them belonging to the 5th cenlury BC. In addition to the cemetery, many important installations connected with metallurgical activities were located on the surface (public buildings, houses, metal wa- sheries, water cisterns, roads, etc.) over an area of c. 350 hectares (865 acres). The great number of installations, the 5th century date of the cemetery and many other indications make the identification of this metallurgical centre as ancient Maroneia, one of the most important centres in ancient Laureotice, almost a certainty.
