A late archaic grave from Argos

In 1980 an excavation in the southern part of the city (Orphanage area) brought to light, together with three others, a cist grave of the end of the 6th century BC. The grave contained the dead person’s bones and rich offerings: 18 Attic black-figure, 37 Corinthian and 7 Argive vases, a figurine, a terracotta table and the remains of an iron strigli. The Attic vases are of poor quality, except for a skyphos of the White Heron group with a resting Herakles on the front, which can be connected with a contemporary satyr-play, and the Return of Hephaistos on the back. The Corinthian vases, except for two, belong to the Late Corinthian II phase and have linear or floral decoration. The miniature vases with dark or without glaze, were produced locally, and the figurine of a seated woman in primitive style and the three-legged table are also from a local workshop.
