Abstract:
Spilia is a small village on the western slopes of the hill of Vermio in the modern province of Eordaia, Nomos of Kozani; the whole of the area of the village belongs to ancient Eordaia. Northeast of the village, at the foot of a small hill with surface finds of the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, a Macedonian tomb was discovered and excavated, the first in the region of Ano Macedonia.Tt has two chambers; inside it measures 3.36 in width, 6.52 m in length overall, and the burial chamber is 4.12 m long. It has a Doric façade; four halfcolumns, fluted only on the upper part, support the rock cornice, which consists of eight triglyphs and seven metopes. The free pediment conceals the single vault that roofs both chambers. Between the halfcolumns are relief shields with painted decoration. In contrast to the outside, there is no painted decoration inside. The tomb remained urobbed in antiquity but was disturbed by the modern illicit excavations which uncovered it. There was a built couch and table in the burial chamber. Its construction is dated to the 2nd quarter of the 2nd century BC, and it had served for a lot of burials by the end of the 1st century BC. The grave goods were numerous: clay vases, clay figurines of females, currycombs and three bronze coins.
