Byzantine plates from the Kastellorizo wreck

In 1970 a wrecked ship with a cargo of pottery was located by chance near the promontory of Zafirion (Pounenti) on Kastellorizo, or Megiste, an island 75 nautical miles east of Rhodes. This paper describes 103 plates that were retrieved from the wreck at different times. 92 of them are in the Kastellorizo Museum; the other 11 are in Brussels: 2 in the Royal Museum of Art and History and 9 in a private collection. They all have the same shape and size, and most of them are complete and very well preserved. They are deep plates and may be classified as tableware for everyday use.We can divide them into the following categories according to the decoration on the inside of them: 1. Incised sgraffito. 2. Sgraffito - Developed style. 3. Slip-painted. 4. Green or green-brown painted wares: 4a. Slip wares with green splashed decoration,4b. Green and brown painted wares.The value of the Kastelorizo plates, which are dated to the 13th c., lies in the fact that they constitute a closed find whose publication will assist in a more precise dating of Byzantine pottery. Not only is it an important find that has yielded a large number of plates, but this cargo of pottery was probably loaded onto the ship perhaps only a few days after it had been made in some as yet unkown workshop, which we believe must have been an important Byzantine pottery-making centre. We must point out that this pottery has a wide distribution and stress the fact that in recent years quantities of pottery with incised sgraffito decoration have been steadily coming to light in excavations on Rhodes.

Στις 22-8-1990 και ενώ η μελέτη είχε ήδη κατατεθεί, βρέθηκαν στην κατοχή Γάλλου αρχαιολόγου που πραγματοποιούσε υποβρύχιες έρευνες στο Καστελλόριζο, 68 πινάκια, που σύμφωνα με όλες τις ενδείξεις προέρχονται από το φορτίο του ίδιου πλοίου. Η σύλληψη του αρχαιοκαπήλου πραγματοποιήθηκε χάρις στις ενέργειες του Φύλακα Αρχαιοτήτων Η. Διακάκη, ο οποίος για την πράξη του αυτή τιμήθηκε από την Ακαδημία Αθηνών. Για τα αγγεία αυτά ετοιμάζεται συμπληρωματική δημοσίευση., Περιέχει 32 πίνακες και συντομογραφίες.
