"Type II" ancient rectangular ore-washeries in the Lavreotiki

Abstract:
Recent archaeological excavations at Lavrion have uncovered a number of rectangular ore- washeries whose form is different from those called ‘Type II" washeries; the new ones may be called "Type II" washeries. The existence of another type of washery was noted some years ago by the excavators of the Attic silver mines; as a result of the new finds, we now know their actual form. The "Type II" rectangular washeries date from the Classical period. The rectangular "Type II" washery (Fig. 8) is similar to, generally speaking, and the same size as the "Type I" rectangular washery, from which it differs only with respect to the arrangement of some of the parts. The “cycle” for moving and automatically cleaning the water is not set around the ore Drying Floor (Σ), as in the "Type I" washery, but runs in the opposite direction and encircles the top of the washery - that is, the Inclining Floor (E), the Cistern (Δ) and the Draining Board. The first Water Channel (Al) and the Last Sedimentation Basin (Φ3) of the cycle are in the same position in both Types. The "Type II" washery has a Drying Floor exactly like that in the "Type I". "Type II" occurs with slight variations.
