Three Hospitaller inscriptions from Rhodes

In Rhodes the few surviving medieval tombstones complement historical information from other sources.1. Tombstone of Cypriot noble (t ca. 1365). A son of the Marshal of Cyprus Jean de Morf, count of Roucha. Jean de Morf survived his male issue; the tombstone recalls the close cooperation between the Order of the Hospital and Peter I of Cyprus (1359-1369) which culminated in the sack of Alexandria in 1365.2. Tombstone of Cypriot officer, turcopolier Peter Pelestrin (f 1471 ). His presence in Rhodes is explained by the hospitality accorded by the Order to the followers of queen Carlotta of Cyprus when she lost her throne to her half-brother, James II the Bastard (r. 1460-1473).3. Tombstone of German Knight Hospitaller (and Grand Bailli of the Order from 1477) Besso von Lichtenberg (41480); confirms popular cult associated with the crusading ethos of the late Middle Ages.
