Attic red-figured kalpis in the A. Nomidis collection Piraeus Museum

The kalpis in the Nomidis collection is a carefully designed artwork by a skilful painter. The structure of the picture, the plasticity which characterises the figures and the lively movement, lead us to the works of Polygnotos (kalpis in the Robinson collection in Baltimore and others) to whom we attribute the kalpis in the Nomidis collection. The shape of the vase also leads us to kalpis of painters of the polygnotian group.The scene is composed of five figures and represents the pursuit of a woman by Zeus. We believe the pursued woman to be nymph Aegina, as it emerges from comparison with other pictures of the same subject and similar composition, where Aegina is recognised due to the inscription.The vase is dated around 430 BC and this chronology is based on comparisons with other works of Polygnotos, which have already been dated and which have similarities to the kalpis in the Nomidis collection.
