Abstract:
The classroom of the second language and culture is not only the place where migrants ’ children learn. It represents also the frame inside which a civilization and a language, often absent from the everyday’s life of these children, are activated. This activation is not independent from the unavoidable and positive meeting, during the teaching-learning process, of the second language and of the mother tongue which is often the most spoken one by the children on a day-to-day basis. This meeting provokes and pushes for the alternative use of both codes (in this case greek and french) from students as well as from teachers. The alternative use is not without reason. It dependson factors that have to do with interlocutors, the communicative context, with the speech ’s and reasoning’s content of the communicative act, with the acts of speech and the functioning of interactivity. In this way the code switching satisfies various functions for every language, functions that represent the influence of the social surrounding on the minority language communities and define the relations that these languages keep between each other.
