Abstract:
The basis of the association’s activities is the teaching of reading and writing to gypsy children of primary education; its first activities in Dendropotamos, Thessaloniki date back to 1995. Up to now, research and intervention in this area usually does not take into account the lack of uniformity in the population, the absence of preschool education, and the status of this group’s language in relation to that of the dominant social group. The proposals of DROM association for the improvement of the education the gypsies are offered refer to the introduction of new services (for example, Visiting Teacher, Special Teacher for Travellers, preparatory classes) in schools where gypsies study and to the establishment of motives for school attendance by gypsy children.
