This paper has two main objectives: a) to present the institutions, the profile of learners and teachers of Italian in Greece today and comment on the existing materials; b) to alert educational bodies on the prospect of negative developments for Italian in Greece if courses in this foreign language are not offered in state secondary schools. The author, knowing that the Greek Ministry of Education has no plans or intention to introduce the teaching of Italian in Greece, makes suggestions to the representatives of Italy in Greece in order to urge the Ministry towards a favourable decision.

Το κείμενο αυτό βασίζεται σε ομιλία που έγινε στο Ιταλικό Μορφωτικό Ινστιτούτο της Θεσσαλονίκης, στο πλαίσιο διημερίδας που είχε το γενικό τίτλο «Η ελληνική γλώσσα και λογοτεχνία στα ιταλικά πανεπιστήμια και ερευνητικά κέντρα», στις 15 και 16 Δεκεμβρίου 1997. Συνδιοργανωτές ήταν το Ινστιτούτο και το Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας.
