One of the most important decisions we have to make in teaching a foreign language is which words and which meanings should be taught first. The purpose of this paper is to present the criteria of vocabulary selection and also to offer a brief report on the literature on Basic Vocabulary and Frequency Lists, mainly in Italian as well as other languages. Basic Vocabulary is the number of words which refer to the most common meanings and which are substantial for basic communication. Frequency List is a count of the total numbers of occurrences of linguistic items in a language corpus.
