Abstract:
A diligent examination of the authorities allows to infer that the Eudoxean datesgiven by P. Merlan (396 / 395 B.C. - 343 / 342 B.C.) do not fall wide of the mark.Close analysis reveals that Petronius' reference to Eudoxus is not in contradictionwith Apollodorus' and Pliny's testimonia Eudoxea. In view of other relevant evidence produced not only by Aulus Gellius, but also by the author of ChronicumPaschale, it is legitimate to argue that Eudoxus' fìoruit, which has been preserved bythe author of Vita Ptolemaei, represents Eudoxus' year of birth. Consequently, weattempt to resolve some problems related to Eusebius' references to Eudoxus and weconcentrate on two erroneous statements on Eudoxus' floruit, which have beendrawn from Aulus Gellius and Julius Africanus.
