Abstract:
The philosophy of Epictetus is particularly important for two reasons: it wasformed at the time of conflict between Roman eudemonism and Christian era and iteffected the essential philosophical marks of the stoical thought. Epictetus' thoughtis realistic and directly controlling. It moves in two levels. Indirectly it uncoversman's sick addictions to his environment and his unhealthy success in achievingephemeral goods. He proposes the need for reconsidering of the above way of livingand for accepting man's weakness to dominate over the nature of things and life. While attempting to realize the social and natural inequalities, he involves themetaphysics and transposes the domination from human region to the Holy and theNeed. On the other hand, while showing the violation of human power over reality,he also takes care to highlight the very opposite, the stable ground for human beings, that is intention. He suggests independent intention as man's weapon against hispassions and against the conspiracies of his environment. The fight for freedom takesplace in the area of man's independent intention. At that dimension human beingsbecome free or slaves. The foundation of Philosophy and Culture is Intention, whichis guided by cosmical order and Holy will. The enrollment of human intention at thearea of Holy will is the ultimate type of Culture and Philosophy. It is Freedom.
