Abstract:
The study presents the terminological archaisms of the idiom of Velvendo in W. Macedonia, based on the material included in the treatise of Euth. Boudonas’ «Περί του γλωσσικού ιδιώματος Βελβεντού και των περιχώρων αυτού», Athens 1892, and the material which comes from the personal collection of the author, who knows the idiom. The author does not draw this material from the whole of the terminological potential of the idiom that she has collected herself, but from the chapter of the archaisms included in the treatise by E. Douga-Papadopoulou - Chr. Tzitzilis «Το γλωσσικό ιδίωμα της ορεινής Πιερίας (Ελατοχώρι, Έλαφος, Λόφος, Κάτω Μηλιά, Μεσαία Μηλιά, Μοσχοπόταμος, Ράχη, Ρητίνη) Λεξιλόγιο - Παραγωγικό» (currently under publication), with which she is comparing it. The material of the archaisms is divided into tables, according to the source that the author draws the material from, also some information is given as to the origin of the archaisms, their presence in the villages of Pieria or in other idioms etc.The total of the archaisms is 319 and this number can be considered rather high if we take into account that it does not come from the total of the terminological potential of the idiom, but only from a part of it. This number will certainly rise when in future there will be a complete collection of the terminological riches of the idiom. The rather large presence of the archaisms in the idiom confirms the view that the Macedonian idioms preserve in their vocabulary many archaic elements, not found in the written tradition, and that in the geographic distribution of even words found in other idioms as well, in the Lexicon of archaisms not only Velvendo is not mentioned but not even Macedonia. This fact points to the need of collecting the linguistic material of Macedonia as quickly as possible, taking into consideration that the live material which is the basic source of our information is getting lost with the years and with it a whole linguistic treasure.
