Abstract:
The first part of this study describes the civil administration of the Thessaloniki area between 1300 and 1341, on the basis of historiographical, literary, and diplomatic sources. It examines the boundaries of the theme of Thessaloniki, its administrative and geographical subdivisions (katepanikia), the titles and duties of the Governor, the unsuccessful efforts of Empress Yolanda-Irene to achieve autonomy for the area, and the prosopography of the governors of the theme. The second part discusses the main duty of the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, which was to summon the local synod, and then proceeds to an in- depth analysis of the administrative structure of the «ecclesiastical order» of the metropolis of Thessaloniki, based on the Notitiae Episcopatuum. More specifically, the author describes the changes regarding the place of metro polis of Thessaloniki within the hierarchy of other metropolis under the direct jurisdiction of the Oecumenical throne and the bischoprics dependent on the metropolis of Thessaloniki. The study ends with a detailed prosopography of the metropolians of Thessaloniki in the above period, relying chiefly on data based on synodical and monasterial documents.
