Abstract:
Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum IV, 2 edited in Latin the year1877 in Berlin by E. Curtius and A. Kirchhoff contains a great number of Greek Christian and Byzantine inscriptions based on A. Boeckh'sand J. Franz's collected material, which comes from works of europeanscientists and travellers in the Orient during the 17th, 18th and 19thcenturies.This work, though significant, has certain omissions. These are: a)the classification of the material only according to the kind of inscriptions (decrees, tomb inscriptions, seals, Jewish inscriptions a.s.o.), b) thelack of a geographical division, which should indicate the origin of theinscriptions, c) the poor chronological index. The purpose of the present work is to study from this Corpus thedated byzantine stone inscriptions from 527 A. D. and hence and tomake a catalogue with the recent bibliography. These inscriptions aremainly decrees, building, sepulchral, dedicatory and acclamatory inscriptions of great importance due to their contribution to History andArchaeology. The inscriptions on icons, small objects of art, seals and theJewish inscriptions, which occur in the same volume of Corpus are notincluded in this work.In order to select the new publications of the inscriptions many booksand bibliographical bulletins have been used. The material is classifiedaccording to the geographical areas and there follows at the end ofthe work a chronological index, which also contains the corrected dates.
