Abstract:
Several post-Byzantine icons on Naxos are signed bythe priest and painter "Skevophylax Ispanos" (Ispanosthe Sacristan 1719-42), and there are others by hisdescendant or relative Nikolaos Ispanos (second half ofthe 18th century). Codex A of the metropolis of Parosand Naxos refers to the priest Nikolaos Spanos (1719)and the priest Nikolaos Ispanos (1737). Στην ίδια περιοχή συναντάται και τοεπώνυμο Σπανός.fied with the Sacristan. M. Chatzidakis, on the otherhand (Έλληνες ζωγράφοι μετά την 'Αλωση, 1450-1830, vol. 1, Athens 1987, p. 322) considers "Skevophylax" to be the baptismal name of the artist. The signature"the hand of the Skevophylax of Drymaia (an area ofNaxos), Ispanos" (Chatzidakis, op.cit., p. 321) revealsthat it refers to the ecclesiastical office, which, as in otherexamples, has displaced the priest's name.
