Abstract:
The icon of the Lamentation was first seen in 1992 in theTemple Gallery, London. It is in almost perfect conditionand measures 0.34x0.55 m.Rising in the centre of the depiction is a cross behindwhich rise the walls of Jerusalem. In front of the cross, theVirgin is seated on a marble sarcophagus and holds thedead Christ, who lies over her knees. The figure of theTheotokos is flanked by two groups of people. To the left, the three disciples of Christ: John, Nikodemos and Josephof Arimathea; to the right four myrrhophoroi. The iconography of the scene contains significantinnovations. Here we have an original combination of aWestern Pietà, a Descent from the Cross and a Lamentation(Epitaphios Threnos). The painter, however, maintainsenough details from the Lamentation as that scene had beenfreely developed in a variety of ways during the Palaeologan period.Iconographical and stylistic evidence permits the icon tobe attributed to a Cretan painter of the 16th century. Due,however, to the unique nature of the iconography, it is notpossible to establish the workshop where the icon wasproduced.
