Abstract:
The icon in the Byzantine Museum, Τ 329 (dim. 40.5 x29 x 3 cm), is of particular interest due to its iconographicalinnovations and its rich theological content.The empress Theodora, responsible for the Restoration ofthe Holy Icons in 843, is depicted here. In 1456, her relicswere transferred to Kerkyra where they still are kept inthe island's Cathedral.St Theodora, enthroned, wears imperial vestments and acrown. She holds an icon of the Hodegetria and a sceptrein her left hand while her right points to the icon. Thefront of the base of the wooden throne bears the crest ofKerkyra in a rectangular frame along with the Greekinscription: "This icon was made by me, EmmanuelTzanes, priest, and was dedicated to the most honorablearchons and syndikoi of God-guarded Kerkyra". Αποτελεί μια πρωτότυπηδημιουργία, με πολλαπλά επίπεδα προσέγγισης, μιασύλληψη που αντανακλά τις προσωπικές ανησυχίεςκαι προθέσεις του ζωγράφου. Οι εικονογραφικές αναζητήσεις και πρωτοτυπίες, τις οποίες εντοπίσαμε σεαυτή τη μελέτη, που συνδέονται άμεσα με το ιστορικόπλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο δημιουργήθηκε η εικόνα, καθώς και το πλούσιο θεολογικό περιεχόμενο που τη διέπει, ρίχνουν περισσότερο φως στην πολυσήμαντη προσωπικότητα του Εμμανουήλ Τζάνε.51. Ό.π., σ. 35.The saint's face is rendered with finely executedfeatures and the thick linear highlights give it a majesticfeel. The carefully rendered folds of the drapery, thelove of detail, the indulgence in decoration, and thebright colours all go to underscore the great talent of theRethymniote painter.The icon of St Theodora is the work of Tzanes' Venetianperiod. In 1671, he composed an Akolouthia in honour ofthe saint, and sent it together with the icon to the authorities on Kerkyra. By mustering and combining hisliterary and artistic capabilities -as he had done earlierfor St Gobdelaas- Tzanes expresses his gratitude to theauthorities for the hospitality given him while he wasliving on the island. Most of all, he projects and upliftsthe saint as one of the most important figures inOrthodox history.
