Abstract:
Presented is an icon of the martyrdom of St Charalambos, protector against plague, dedicated by the Astypalitan hieromonk Gavriil son of Roussetos Gasparis. The work comes from the church of the Virgin Portaitissa in Astypalaia and was painted by Constantinos from Adrianople, who was active in Thrace and Constantinople. Its iconography is examined and its model explored in the domains of painting and of hymnography, while an attempt is made to identify the dedicator with persons in the ecclesiastical history of the period.
